INS Vikramaditya Introduction to Indian Navy

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has dedicated INS VIKRAMADITYA to Indian navy on 14th June 2014 and it marked the beginning of a new era of military build up in the Indian Ocean. It is an important day of Indian navy to acquire and operate 45000 tonnes class warship that will increase maritime muscles as it will carry 34 aircrafts of MiG-29k and helicopters. It will replace aging 55 years old Viraat aircraft carrier .The PM decision to be on the board of INS VIKRAMADITYA as his first outing again points out the urgency and importance the new government is giving to modernization of Indian navy. It is essential in modern security scenario as India is surrounded by hostile countries from most of the sides.

Keeping the security scenario in the view, the NDA government in 2004 purchased Russian Admiral Gorshkov later named as INS VIKRAMADITYA at the cost of$ 800 million dollars and further ordered the purchase of 45MiG-29K at the cost of $2.0 dollors. There was inordinate delay and over running of the cost in acquiring the vikramaditya which has delayed  India's process of the modernisation of navy but all is well that ends well. Now everybody knows that in modern warfare the role of navy will be very important therefore the government has decided to go for modernization of all the three wings of Indian army and PM has stressed on indigenisation of defence production and even propogated hundred percent FDI in the defence sector. Indian navy has to take care of huge strategic interests in this region therefore it has already ordered 44 warships at the cost of over Rs. two lakh crore.

The story of acquiring Admiral Gorshkov is full of cotrversies and complexities as India decided to purchase it when it was decommissioned in 1996 by Russia due to its high running and maintenance costs.India looking for a replacement for its carrier INS VIRAAT negotiated the deal at $800millions whichwas the cost of refitting as carrier was given free cost but later on Russia went back from its commitments  and asked for a higher price
of $2.9billions citing various reasons for cost  over running but real ressons sre best known to Russia. After several rounds of negotiations, the deal was finally negotiated a day before the visit or Russian president Puttin in 2010 at $2.35 billions. There is a story that an Indian officer  Mr.Sujinder Singh who in charge of refitting of Vikramaditya has blackmailed Indian authorities and later on he was removed. The during the sea trial there was a problem in boiler which was removed.According to the military experts INS VIKRAMADITYA has a life of 40years and will not require any major overhauling as it is refarbricated by 70% and all its cables are new.Originally it has IBM launching barrels which were removed to create second runway. Therefore with all its new war fittings the aircraft carrier is capable of countering any type of naval threats.

As regards to naval strength of other neighboring countries, only China has more fire power than India as its newly acquired  Warship carrier from Ukraine is of 65000-tonne and it is further building bew carriers . India on the other hand building 40000 tonne INS Vikrant to be operational during 2018-19.Pakistan has no Aircraft carrier as a result India faces threats only from China and the new government will have to keep pace with China. As  navy requires huge amount of money for its modernization and for the purchase of new warfare  power therefore a fine balancing is required to boost up military build up.

MiG-29K to be deployed on INS VIKRAMADITYA

PM has clearly given a message to the world that India will not aim to threaten other countries but it will not allow other countries to threaten India. Therefore the role of 282 metre long and 58.3 metre high VIKRAMADITYA is very important to maintain regional balance. At the same time he  put great  emphasis on the indigenous profuction of defence equipments is very relevant as India's experience with Russia and other countries is not very good and they may not be trustworthy at the time of war.Furthermore after disintrgration of USSR most of defence production centres are in the other  countries that may not be as friendly to India as is Russia therefore it is better for India to find out some reliable supplier of arms and equipments.
